Emerson Hancock
Emerson Hancock Throwing in camp
Wed, Feb 14, 2024, 2:38 PM
Hancock (shoulder) threw a bullpen session Wednesday at Mariners camp.
Analysis: After receiving his first big-league call-up in early August, Hancock made just three starts for the Mariners before suffering a Grade 1 shoulder strain, which ended his season. Fortunately for the 24-year-old, he avoided any structural damage and didn't require offseason surgery, so he looks like he'll begin spring training at full health. Hancock will be given a chance to compete for a spot in Seattle's Opening Day rotation, but with five other healthy, more established pitchers in front of him in Luis Castillo, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, Bryan Woo and Bryce Miller, it may take an injury in order for Hancock to avoid an assignment to Triple-A Tacoma once camp comes to a close.

Shipley signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Jan. 14, Baseball America reports.
Analysis: Shipley has been in the Mariners organization the last two seasons but didn't make an appearance in 2023, most recently posting a 3.79 ERA and 58:36 K:BB over 54.2 relief innings at Double-A Arkansas in 2022. Slated to turn 32 later this month, Shipley hasn't reached the big leagues since 2018.

McCaughan cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday.

Sean Poppen Gets NRI from Seattle
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 11:16 PM

Analysis: Poppen spent all of last season with the Padres' Triple-A affiliate, accumulating a 6.33 ERA and 1.88 WHIP across 58.1 innings in 47 appearances. Barring a significant turnaround from the 29-year-old righty during spring camp, Poppen should return to Triple-A to begin the new season.

Lawrence signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Wednesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Lawrence got into 15 games with the Cardinals in 2023, holding a 6.59 ERA and 20:10 K:BB over 27.1 innings. The 36-year-old figures to operate as swingman depth at Triple-A Tacoma.
Darren McCaughan
Darren McCaughan Removed from 40-man roster
Wed, Feb 7, 2024, 2:25 PM
McCaughan was designated for assignment by the Mariners on Wednesday.
Analysis: The move clears space on the 40-man roster for waivers claim Canaan Smith-Njigba. McCaughan, who turns 28 next month, allowed three earned runs in five innings with the Mariners in 2023 and posted a 5.83 ERA in 25 starts with Triple-A Tacoma.

Analysis: He joins younger brother and Seattle Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba in the Pacific Northwest. Smith-Njigba (the baseball player) is just 5-for-37 during his brief time in the majors but slashed .280/.366/.473 with 15 homers and 21 steals in 2023 at Triple-A Indianapolis. He'll compete for an Opening Day roster spot but does have an option year remaining.
Collin Snider

Tue, Feb 6, 2024, 1:21 PM
The Mariners claimed Snider off waivers from the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Snider has made 62 appearances at the big-league level, posting an uninspiring 5.93 ERA and 33:28 K:BB over 54.2 frames. He does boasts a 51.9 percent groundball rate, which gives Seattle something to work with.
Heath Hembree
Heath Hembree Signs minors deal with M's
Sat, Feb 3, 2024, 4:56 PM
Hembree signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Friday.
Analysis: Hembree turned in 1.1 scoreless frames during his lone major-league appearance last season, and he gave up three runs in 13 innings between the Tigers' and Rays' Triple-A affiliates. The 35-year-old righty will report to Triple-A Tacoma and offer the Mariners organizational bullpen depth.
Gregory Santos
Gregory Santos Traded to Seattle
Sat, Feb 3, 2024, 3:35 PM
The White Sox traded Santos (elbow) to the Mariners on Saturday in exchange for Prelander Berroa, Zach DeLoach and the 69th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The White Sox continue their rebuild by unloading Santos, who posted a 3.39 ERA and 1.30 WHIP while striking out 66 batters in 66.1 frames and recorded five saves during his first full MLB season. Santos ended the season on the injured list due to right elbow inflammation and has been easing his way back to full health during the offseason. The 24-year-old righty had been in a position to operate as Chicago's closer, but Santos projects as a middle reliever in a deeper Seattle bullpen.
Josh Rojas
Josh Rojas Could see more time at third
Fri, Feb 2, 2024, 8:55 PM
Rojas, who's projected to fill the strong side of an infield platoon with Dylan Moore, is now likelier to do so at third base rather than second as a result of the Jorge Polanco trade, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Kramer notes that Polanco should play either second base or shortstop based on his big-league resume. As a result, Rojas -- who contributed a solid .272 batting average and .721 OPS across 134 plate appearances after his trade from the Diamondbacks last season -- could see the majority of his time at the hot corner. Offseason arrival Luis Urias is also a candidate to see time at third base. Rojas could end up in a super-utility role instead, as he's played every position except catcher, first base and center field during his five-year MLB career.

Michael Papierski Inks minors deal with Seattle
Wed, Jan 31, 2024, 8:29 AM

Tue, Jan 30, 2024, 4:41 PM
Solak signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday and received an invitation to major-league spring training, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: Solak spent all of last season in Triple-A, slashing .238/.353/.362 across 411 plate appearances between three different franchises. He'll have an opportunity to crack Seattle's Opening Day roster as a bench piece, but the 29-year-old outfielder is likely once again headed to Triple-A in 2024.
Samad Taylor
Samad Taylor Acquired by Mariners
Tue, Jan 30, 2024, 12:51 PM
The Mariners acquired Taylor from the Royals on Monday in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: It's already the third time the 25-year-old has been traded, as he went from the Guardians to the Blue Jays in the Joe Smith trade back in 2017 and from the Jays to the Royals in the Whit Merrifield deal in 2022. Taylor has elite speed and slashed .301/.418/.466 with eight homers and 43 steals at Triple-A Omaha in 2023. He swiped eight more bags in 31 games with Kansas City but hit only .200/.279/.267. Taylor can play all over the diamond and has options remaining.
Jorge Polanco
Jorge Polanco Dealt to Seattle
Mon, Jan 29, 2024, 7:09 PM
Polanco was traded from the Twins to the Mariners on Monday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: It's unclear as to what the Twins are getting in return for Polanco, but Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic states there are four players, two major leaguers and two minor leaguers, headed to Minnesota as part of the deal. This is a huge upgrade for the Mariners at second base, and the 30-year-old will also be available to slot in at the hot corner and in the DH spot as needed. Polanco slashed .255/.335/.454 with 14 homers, 48 RBI, four stolen bases and 38 runs scored over 80 games a season ago with Minnesota.

Austin Voth
Austin Voth Gets MLB deal from Seattle
Wed, Jan 17, 2024, 11:00 AM
Voth signed a one-year, $1.25 million contract with the Mariners on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.
Analysis: The 31-year-old will have an additional year of team control in 2025, as well. Voth collected a 5.19 ERA and 34:15 K:BB over 34.2 innings in 2023 with the Orioles. He was used exclusively in relief last season during his time in the majors but has plenty of past starting experience and could operate in a swingman or long relief role in Seattle.
Ty Buttrey

Tue, Jan 16, 2024, 7:07 PM
Buttrey signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday.
Analysis: Buttrey will attempt to carve out a role for himself in the Mariners organization after surrendering eight runs in 13.1 frames with the Astros' Triple-A affiliate last season. The 30-year-old righty hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2020 during a stint with the Angels.

Tue, Jan 16, 2024, 12:12 PM
Krehbiel signed a minor-league contract with the Mariners on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.
Analysis: Krehbiel, 31, holds a 3.65 ERA and 57:27 K:BB over 74 relief innings covering parts of four seasons at the big-league level. The right-hander spent the 2023 campaign in the Orioles organization, holding a 1.80 ERA in six appearances in the majors and a 3.89 ERA in 35 outings at Triple-A Norfolk.

Thu, Jan 11, 2024, 2:45 PM
Thornton signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Mariners on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
Analysis: Thornton proved to be a valuable addition to Seattle's bullpen after he was traded from Toronto in July. He logged a 2.08 ERA and 1.08 WHIP through 26 innings with the Mariners and figures to be used often in high-leverage situations in 2024.
